EASTHAM SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT COUNCIL MEETING
CALL TO ORDER: 03/14/2012 2:17 p.m., Mrs. Finnegan presiding.
PRESENT: Staff Members: Scotti Finnegan, Mary Genois and Julie Newton

Guest Present: Bonny Gifford, Assistant Superintendent for Nauset Public Schools

MINUTES: - Minutes of the meeting held on March 14, 2012 were approved as published on motion of
Mrs. Newton, seconded by Mrs. Potter and adopted by unanimous vote of those present
and qualified.
COMMON CORE: Bonny Gifford, Nauset’s Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction was present to provide Information on this topic.
Summation
The Common core changes were driven by current assessment of our common standards.
-15% changes made to the common core.
1. Math
2. ELA
3. Pre K standards
-Most notable change in the ELA Frameworks are a shift from primarily literacy to be able to manipulate
informational text in social studies, history, technology and science etc.
-Kids will be able to respond to text using numerous sources.
-The shift has been made from this narrative example to learning how to respond to a variety of
informational sources.
-See the value of text. Their purpose for writing will also include speaking, listening and presentation skills.
-To include a teacher evaluative tool, i.e. modeling.
-Professional Development for PreK teachers to introduce them to the new standards.
Math
-Progressive operations are in place, i.e. K-2(twice a year) 3-5(three times a year)as a whole district.
-This will effectively ensure that the understanding of mathematical principals are implemented.
-“Mapping Teams” to align curriculum available online by the fall.
-SCIENCE CURRICULUM IN PROGRESS
-Common Core State Wide.
-Justice Department requiring certificates for all teachers in ELL, time frame 4 year process , must began by 2014.
TEACHER EVALUATION
-New evaluation process implemented by fall
Technology
-Needs to be district wide initiative.
-Money available this year. What is the best use of these resources?
-*In order for the core to work, teachers need time to create tools.
Strategic Plan
STRATEGIC PLAN Reviewed. Math pacing guide to be changed, as well as other on going pieces in the documents.
